ChaseLawyers℠ On Breaking Into The Music Industry - TuneCore v CDBaby

ChaseLawyers℠ On Breaking Into The Music Industry
Today’s Topic: TuneCore v CDBaby

With digital music sales increasing due to the decline of physical albums, companies (called “aggregators”) such as TuneCore and CDBaby are revolutionizing marketing opportunities for independent artists. Aside from offering online music distribution and performance-royalty collection (working alongside PROs), they also collect publishing royalties from the sale and streaming of compositions.  When faced with the choice of affiliation, however, an in-depth comparison between the two giants may seem daunting.
Allow us to provide a starting point…

(1) With CDBaby, the sign-up cost is $12.95 per song and $49 per album with no annual fee. There is a 15% commission for collecting publishing royalties, with a self-renewing contract term (as long as neither composer or CDBaby terminates) for songwriters & composers (there is a 1-year contract for publishers). In contrast, TuneCore offers free membership, but services trigger fees after affiliation. For example, album distribution costs $29.99 the first year and 49.99 each following year; single distribution costs $9.99 the first year and each following year; ringtone distribution costs $19.99 the first year and each following year; and collection of publishing royalties costs a one-time setup fee of $75.00 plus a 10% commission on earnings.
(2) Even though both CDBaby and TuneCore offer a similar range of services -- music distribution for albums, singles, and ringtones; music publishing royalty collection, among others. -- they do have marked differences regarding royalty collection, commissions on sales, UPC Bar codes, etc.

It’s always helpful to visualize, though. So let’s make a chart!

So What’s The Bottom Line?
Like anything else, it depends on your needs. Taking no cut from digital sales, TuneCore may be the better choice for artists with smaller catalogues or those who set out to do volume. Why? Because annual fees would be more manageable for few as opposed to many works, and those same fees would be more easily recouped for an artist anticipating high sales immediately.  A larger body of work, however, can result in annual fees that start piling up (especially if unit sales remain modest). In that case, CD Baby’s one-time fees may seem more accommodating. On the other hand, CD Baby’s perpetual commission may offer less profit over the long-term and could potentially exceed the value of recurring fees many times over!  If physical product is a controlling consideration for you, CD Baby offers the services you need. However, this advantage declines over time as the profitability of hard copies continues to dwindle across the majority of markets. Finally, customer service and aggregator-sponsored artist websites can also influence affiliation. Here, CD Baby triumphs with the more accessible staff and more polished design. So the choice of affiliation remains with the artist in light of his/her objectives.  Do not be overwhelmed or confused. Simply gather all of the facts and charges you’ll incur, and balance pros and cons as we have.

Good luck on your musical journeys!

@FreakThaMonsta (#ATDSInterview)

Can you give as a little introduction to you as an Artist?

I'm a rapper and producer in the group Four Elements & Beyond (F.E.B.). I'm not too sure which one I enjoy doing more or which one I would consider my main passion. It really depends on my mood. I hail from NY and I think that's pretty evident when you hear the way I write and my style of production. I was pretty much given the name "Tha Monsta" since I was younger, just by being a beast of a dude. I carried that with me into music.

How long have you been making music?

I actually wrote my first song around 6th or 7th grade. It was awful haha, but nonetheless it had bars and a hook. I also used to freestyle a ton when I was a kid and force my younger brother (and F.E.B. crew member) Miggs to get in on it with me. That's how I started really developing the skill and feel for rhyming. I didn't start taking it seriously till around 2003, though. I was still finding my style…shit, I'm still finding my style now. Either that or I just enjoy switching shit up a lot and keeping things fresh. I guess I just chalk that up to growing creatively.

How many songs /albums have you released to date?

Damn. My group and I have released a lot of music over the years. We've got a few mixtapes as a group. I've got 2 solo mixtapes under my belt (The Concrete Jungle & A Monster's Touch) both hosted by Statik Selektah. Even though they were mixtapes, I produced like 28 tracks between the two. We just hit the 1 year anniversary of my first official LP with my man Werd Life (F.E.B.) called 'The Sewer-Side Kings.' I produced that whole project. This EP 'Jackson Brolick' which is set to drop Feb. 11th will be entirely produced by me as well.

Can you tell us about your new project and the background and inspirations behind it?

'Jackson Brolick' is going to be an 8 track EP. I produced all the songs. It's straight up New York boom-bap to the core. I don't make that wack shit. This is not 90's hip-hop, but when you hear this you're going be like "Oh, I remember this feeling!"
The album features the rest of the F.E.B. team, MothaBug from Word of Mouth (an 8 piece fusion band from Savannah, GA), Apathy (AOTP/Demigodz), DJ JS-1 (Rock Steady Crew), DJ Kwestion (Jedi Mind Tricks), and Shylow.
I've got some sick conceptual songs on here, hard hitting hype joints, and some tracks where I just drop knowledge on heads.
The title is a play off the artist Jackson Pollock. I see some similarities between his abstract style of drip painting and how I go about my craft in both song/bar structure and production. Plus that name sounds so dope, right?

How have you ended up in the music industry?

I wouldn't really say I'm in the industry. I've made some good musical career choices and got some play on TV shows, radio, and other spots, but that's all from grinding. We're an independent label with ZERO funding. We do this all on our own. EVERYTHING is in house. Everything is in our hands. As overwhelming as it may get sometimes, we have complete control of how our product sounds and looks. That's not to say we wouldn't like a push on the promotion end, but we definitely like having complete creative control.

What do you think of the music industry at the moment?

Well we all know mainstream hip-hop fell off a huge cliff for a while. It looks like some people on the scene are breathing some life into it, but to be honest I've distanced myself from it so much it hurts. I'll always be a fan first, but when you hear so much garbage over and over, it gets depressing. However, when you look at hip-hop as a whole, it's doing great. I still hit up shows of major artists who are killing it! They just don't get that mainstream shine anymore. Those big labels want the puppet/get-rich-quick lames. That shit don't fly.

Who inspires you when you make your music?

To be honest, my own team inspires me. I've never been the one to watch and study a style to try and mimic it. I just go digging in the crates, find some dope shit and get to it. Me and the rest of the team spit ball concepts and shit is like magic. The chemistry is RIDICULOUS. You gotta have that as a group. It shows in our music and our live show.

Who have you collaborated with so far in your Career?

As an artist, I'm always trying to build. If I work wit somebody, their shit gotta be dope and I need them to respect my shit too. Like I said earlier, I worked wit Statik on my 2 mixtapes, Domingo (producer for Pun, KRS, and many more), DJ JS-1, DJ Kwestion, Shylow, Apathy, some foreign and local heads as well. I'll work wit anybody that got heat!

Who would you like to collaborate with in the future?

Wow..that list is OD long so I'm gonna have to give you the shortened version. RZA (mainly, but anybody from Wu), Immortal Tech, DJ Premier, Alchemist, Vinnie Paz, MOP, D-Block, The Beatnuts, Kool G Rap, Slick Rick, Mos Def, Lauryn Hill, Saigon, Black Thought. I could really go on and on.

What was the first album u bought?

The first album "I" bought was Biggie's 'Ready To Die.' The reason why I phrase it like that is because the cashier at the record store wouldn't sell me the CD cuz I was too young, so my mother had to cop it for me. She was like "I wanna hear what this is all about when we get home." I played it for her and she was like, "Oh no, I can't let you listen to this." Imagine her face when she heard "One More Chance" and the following skit haha. I was in love with hip-hop ever since.

Whats your favorite song at the moment?

I'm digging that track "God Bless" by Vinnie Paz. That shit is hard!

If you had to sell your music collection tomorrow, what album would you leave in your drawer?

Ah man. It would probly have to be that copy of 'Ready To Die' on sentimental value alone. Or on some conceited shit, I'll save one of my own albums like SSK since I don't got millions printed.

What do you think of TV music talent show competitions?

I think they're kinda corny. First of all, none of them cater to hip-hop anyway so it's kind of irrelevant. They did have that one show, the White Rapper Show. It was such a joke, though. I got love and respect for Serch, but those contestants?!! Chill, I woulda ate them alive. Yoww.

What do you do when your not making music?

I'm big into cooking. So not only do I be cheffin it up in the lab, but I get it in in the kitchen, too. My knife game's impeccable.

How many hats do you own?

I'd say around 50 or so right now.

How many followers do you have on twitter?

Yo on some real shit, my Twitter game is weak. I can't keep up wit all these sites. I'm not really on it like that. If you wanna hit me on there, it's @FreakThaMonsta. I'm on Facebook and Instagram the most, though.

How do you feel about Underground Hip Hop at the moment, do things need to change?

I think the underground hip-hop scene is the dopest place to reside right now. It's stacked wit so much talent and so many cats that wanna preserve this culture. When you look at all the shit that's floated to the top, it's laughable compared to the artists we got at this level. Unfortunately, even the underground is saturated with a ton of fans turned rappers that wanna sip Cristal and have a Rollie wrapped wrist, but can't write a song or even a decent bar to save their life. If you are one of those people and you're reading this….stop! This is not for you. UPS is definitely still hiring.

What are your thoughts on the All That Dope Shit Blog?

Yall are doing ya thing over here! There's a lot of blogs out there, but as a hip-hop site you're either gonna be one of two things. You either gonna do the work, seek out or sift through artist and songs that YOU feel are dope and give them a lil shine to try and break them…OR…You follow the trend and just post the same ol' shit that every other blog got with the hopes you're blog pops off. I think you guys are doing the right thing here. Keep that shit up.

Anything else you would like to add?

All I wanna say to everybody out there is that we got something different going on. We're far from your run of the mill rappers. My team and I put a lot of effort, time, and thought into everything we do….every line we write. We're perfectionists.

We currently got a Kickstarter campaign running. Everybody needs to check this out, pledge and help spread the word. This is your obligation as an underground hip-hop fan. Support cats that are really doin it.

@Centric510 & @JocScholar #GrandOpus4Ever

In the vein of Pete Rock & C.L Smooth, Reflection Eternal, Gang Starr and other legendary hip-hop MC/Producer duos, Grand Opus is a newly formed group out of California and the nostalgia-inducing “Forever” is their debut single. Joc Scholar, the emcee out of Fresno and Bay-area producer Centric (who has worked with the likes of Sean Price, Kool G Rap, Rapper Big Pooh, Wordsmith and more), come together to create a timeless offering, letting listeners know that hip-hop is very much alive on the West Coast. With Centric’s hard hitting drums and melodic chords combined with Joc Scholar’s mic presence and thought provoking rhymes, “Forever” captures a feel of where vintage meets the future.

The music video was shot and directed by Gimante in San Francisco, Ca.

PozLyrix - Third Shift (Music Video)

Coming out of the seven Oddities camp, Pozlyrix already has a heavy amount of features under his belt. Collaboration with Scenic Roots and A Walk in the Park productions formed the group “Bottom Dollar Scholars” that gave Poz his first taste of being an MC beyond the studio releasing a video and traveling around the city of Chicago and east coast to hit the stage. 40 oz Kings, another group out of Seven Oddities that Pozlyrix was a part of helped expand his music career. In 2011 the group entered “Toast of the coast”, a competition that would give the winner a performance slot at the North Coast Music festival in Chicago. After the first step which consisted of a few days of online voting they moved onto to a battle of the bands type of competition. After showing they were better than 100 other performers, the 40 oz. Kings came out on top and were in the 2011 North Coast festival lineup among acts like Common, Rjd2, Wiz Khalifa and David Guetta.

Having gained experienced, confidence and expanding his artistic spectrum, Poz has ventured into his first solo effort. Chicago Native is the first solo project for Pozlyrix. A sample heavy album filled with gritty boom bap landscapes allows the MC to paint complex pictures of the life of an MC in an iconic city

Step Brothers “Lord Steppington” is out now on Rhymesayers Entertainment

Alchemist & Evidence have always shared a strong bond.  If you trace back the lineage of there respective careers to the very beginning you will find that they have always regularly contributed to each others projects. As the pair’s collaborations continued to mount, they began labeling themselves as “Step Brothers” when they would record; as noted on Evidence’s The Layover EP and it was only a matter of time before they decided to record an album together.  That time is now upon us, as Alchemist & Evidence will be releasing the first Step Brothers project, Lord Steppington, on 1-21-14 courtesy of Rhymesayers Entertainment.

Living Legend (Pete Rock Tribute) Ed OG ft. Grap Luva & Rob-O (Produced by Confidence) (Music Video)

Hip-Hop legend Edo.G teams up with his apprentices G. Dot & Born, Boston natives, to shine light on their story and style while also providing their own sound.  All production is handled by Confidence, whose claim to fame includes "Rashad and Confidence" and "Purpose and Confidence" on Ill Adrenaline Records and he produced seven tracks on Neek the Exotic’s “Hustle Don’t Stop” LP from 2012.

The LP is fourteen tracks deep with Gdot & Born handling about half the duties on the mic, with the remaining tracks being handled by Edo.G, providing listeners with a nice diversity; while Confidence keeps a steady stream of that authentic Hip-Hop he is known for throughout.

Confidence, a student of the game dating back to the 90’s, first got a taste of music production in the mid 90′s while learning to DJ with his brother Technic.  His break didn't come until 2001 when he copped an MPC 2000xl which he still uses to this day to compose masterpieces.

G. Dot & Born relay the struggle of survival in the streets with hard-hitting raw lyrics, traditional gritty street beats and a confident delivery that takes Hip-Hop back to its essence. G. Dot and Born stay true to the city of Boston that raised them and 90’s Hip Hop influences like J. Dilla, Sean P., Big Pun, Edo G., Kool G. Rap, AZ and Nas by embodying a humble braggadocio that only real life experiences teach you.

Today, the group offers up a tribute song, “Living Legend,” dedicated to the one and only Pete Rock, featuring Pete’s former INI cohorts Grap Luva (Pete’s brother), Rob-O & EDO. G.

Matta Fact - Powerful City (Music Video)

North West, DC - January 13, 2014 – Matta Fact, premiered his socially
consensus music video, “Powerful City” from the album “Mr. Sunshine” (S2M-
Signed to Myself LLC.) at Busboys and Poets, 14th & V; but not without
delivering a spectacular performance, which included S2M Artists,
Dublohskytzo on drums, M.C. Logic and the supporting cast of rappers,
Rafik and Xander Johnson. The sound and vibe of the event left the
audience in awe. As many stated after the event, nobody expected to see
such a well-directed and high quality video, married with the classic
“boom bap” hip hop sound that we all treasure. Matta Fact represents what
is desperately missing from mainstream media today. He is that pearl we’ve
been searching the deep for, and he has been right here in the DMV all
along.

The video was shot throughout the D.C. metropolitan area and features
Matta Fact, M.C. LOGIC, and Rafik as freedom fighters, transporting an
important package; while being pursued by agents: Xander J, V-Sharp and
Dub-L-Oh-Skytzo. Simple Multimedia Inc. filmed this incredible video.
Those out of the area will be intrigued by the monuments and beautiful
columns, as the historical back drop of the plot ties in to the concept of
this “Powerful City”. Many from the area will feel right at home when they
see or hear this video. S2M and Matta Fact look forward to sharing this
video with the world.

Freak Tha Monsta Ft Apathy & DJ Kwestion - I Am That (Single)

Freak Tha Monsta is an MC/Producer and member of New York's hip-hop collective Four Elements & Beyond (F.E.B). His newest project 'Jackson Brolick' is slated to drop February 11th. The self-produced EP was recently announced with his first single "I Am That" ft. Apathy (AOTP/Demigodz) & DJ Kwestion of Jedi Mind Tricks. Freak and Ap join forces to sink their teeth into the eerily, smooth, hard-hitting beat. The point is undoubtedly driven home with precision-like cuts from DJ Kwestion.

Verbal Kent - Raponomics

Hard beats & hard rhymes; both have been core staples of Hip-hop since the culture’s inception. And while artists of today often circumvent this with gimmicks, an LP that combines the two cannot be denied. It's a simple formula that is and will always be effective.

Chicago's Verbal Kent brings this formula to the masses on his upcoming LP, Sound Of The Weapon, produced entirely by North Carolina's Khrysis. The two have an established track record for bringing fans heat. Verbal Kent is a member of Ugly Heroes, a group with Detroit's Red Pill and Apollo Brown. Together, the three released there self-titled debut LP, Ugly Heroes, in 2013 to critical acclaim.  Meanwhile, Khrysis hails from the 9th Wonder-helmed Soul Council, and has produced for Little Brother, Cormega, Torae, Jean Grae, Tanya Morgan, Evidence, Slum Village, Rapsody, Talib Kweli, Elzhi, Masta Ace, Smif N Wessun, Sean Price and Mac Miller, among others.

Sound Of The Weapon is a 13-track LP packed with raw rhymes and crisp, soulful production. Verbal Kent is not one to hide behind, or need a bunch of featured artists either; and to prove it--there are none on the LP. Instead, he punches his weight throughout the new LP taking on Chicago violence, lesser emcees, and even revealing his own story through the three part track “Now Or Never”. Khrysis keeps the production crisp, with a variety of sounds to keep heads nodding. As an added bonus, the Verbal enlists the aid of 9th Wonder for a bonus track remix of the LP’s title track.
