Vanderslice - Trendsetter

Armed with rare records from the Tanner library and a handful of guest features, Vanderslice shares some of his best work to date with the 'Trendsetter' EP. The seven tracks showcase both his gifts as a producer and as a curator. While he provides the snarling, gritty instrumentals, we’re treated to standout appearances from Vic Spencer, Ty Farris, G Perico, Daniel Son, and Capo.

In creating the beats for the project, Slice explains that he had “like 20 or 30 loops at my disposal, all gutter, all in the same vein.” After picking his favorites, he personally linked with the emcees and stayed true to his aesthetic of creating pure, raw rap. The result is a track like “Cold Winter,” a fitting title for a cut bursting with shit-talking lyrics from Chicago’s Vic Spencer and hard-hitting production.

And then there’s Slice’s favorite track on the EP, the G Perico-assisted “Barry White Shit,” that features a straight-up bonkers instrumental. “‘Barry White Shit’ was a blessing, we were fortunate to catch G Perico right before he took flight,” Slice said of working with the L.A native. “The beat is just a loop with bass under it, it’s gritty, and it’s a side of G you rarely hear.”

@GHuff330 & @LJackPower feat. M.O.P. "Another Dead Rapper" (@StatikSelekt Remix)

Midwest representative G. Huff and Southern spitter Lena Jackson had a breakout 2019 following the release of Grace and Alchemy. The project received critical love from mainstream music tastemakers including Okayplayer, RESPECT and EARMILK among others. A few months into the new century, the duo recruits Hip Hop legends M.O.P. and Statik Selektah for a remix to deep Grace and Alchemy album cut “Another Dead Rapper”.

“Another Dead Rapper’ was one of those pivotal album cuts and people I respect like DJ Premier spunt heavily,” said G. Huff. ”For the remix we really wanted to get M.O.P. because there is no greater duo with their level of chemistry and spitting alongside them proves we’re an elite rap duo ourselves while Statik hit a complete home run on the production.”

“We have actual legends blessing us with their presence on this,” said Lena Jackson. “The energy and aggression was already apparent on the original, so it’s only right the masters of aggression came through to enhance this joint and make it a whole other experience.”

Back in February 2019, three groups – Chinese Man, Scratch Bandits Crew and Baja Frequencia – retreated peacefully in the hills to compose together for a special anniversary. The idea: mix their diverse styles and inspirations by focusing on the spontaneity of their productions.

The celebrations for the 15th anniversary of the label Chinese Man Records (CMR) coming up in 2020! Not surprisingly, in less than 10 days, 18 juicy tracks were composed. Six months later, 15 pieces were finally retained in a new album which reflects this exclusive combo: the trip-hop of Chinese Man is mixed with tropical influences from Baja Frequencia and sprinkled with incredible scratches of Scratch Bandits Crew.
